Reviews & awards | Revox A77 MK4

Stereophile.com

rates the Revox A77 as a tape recorder with excellent speed control, minimal wow and flutter, very low noise, and an exceptionally wide frequency response. The portable version, with built-in monitor amplifiers and speakers, is compact and easy to transport. One point of criticism is the use of three-pin jacks for microphone inputs instead of the XLR connectors commonly used in the U.S. In addition, deviations in the high-frequency response were observed in three of the units tested, indicating an inaccurate calibration.

The Absolute Sound

describes the experience of restoring a Revox A77 Mark IV. After years of disuse, the tape recorder was overhauled, which included repairing the power supply and replacing worn-out parts. The author emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance and the availability of specialized repair services to maintain the A77’s performance.

Revox Service

reports that the Revox A77 outperforms its predecessor, the G-36 Mk III. With all-solid-state electronics, a bias oscillator frequency of 120 kHz, and a new electronic motor speed control, the A77 offers excellent frequency response and signal-to-noise ratio. The transport mechanisms operate smoothly and quietly, with minimal wow and flutter. Criticisms include the lack of a pause button and a tape loading path that makes threading the tape difficult.

Galaxus

highlights the nostalgic appeal of the Revox A77 and its warm, analog sound quality. However, performance can vary due to factors such as contamination of the tape heads or the use of less suitable tapes. Despite the A77’s reliability compared to other tape recorders, the device is described as a “capricious diva” that requires careful maintenance.

Amazona.de

shares the experience of a musician who uses the Revox A77 for recording. After some initial caution when setting the recording levels, the author discovered that driving the inputs at a higher level resulted in pleasant tape saturation without unwanted distortion. Maintaining the A77—such as cleaning and demagnetizing it—is considered time-consuming, but the sound quality and the recording process are regarded as highly satisfying.

CD

Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this.
