It’s great to have this in the shop! The Perlisten S5m lets you hear what micro-detail means without being loud; the high frequencies are silky and rounded rather than sharp, with no piercing sibilance. The midrange glides smoothly with transparent vocals and instruments that seem to float free from the cabinet—everything is coherent. The bass extends very deep for a monitor. It performs with ease in all our listening rooms.

Questions & Answers

How does the S5m’s bass-reflex system compare to the sealed-cabinet mode?

In bass-reflex mode, the S5m achieves a theoretical in-room bass extension down to approximately 29 Hz; in sealed (acoustic suspension) mode, this is extended to about 32 Hz, with slightly tighter low-frequency response.

What does the DPC Array do in the S5m, and why is that important?

The DPC-Array combines a single 28 mm beryllium tweeter with two 28 mm Textreme (TPCD) midrange drivers to deliver astonishing accuracy, controlled direct radiation, and minimal distortion in the critical vocal and high-frequency ranges.

What is the recommended amplifier power for the S5m?

Amplifiers ranging from 50 to 300 W RMS are recommended to allow the S5m to deliver optimal performance in terms of dynamics, low distortion, and high sound pressure level.

What about the impedance, and is the S5m difficult to drive?

The nominal impedance is 4 Ω, with a minimum impedance of approximately 3.0 Ω; amplifiers must be capable of delivering sufficient current and remain stable at lower loads.

What are the dimensions and weight of the S5m, and what does that mean for placement?

The S5m measures approximately 600×240×400 mm (HxWxD) and weighs 19 kg; this means that sturdy stands or shelves are required, and that sufficient space behind the speaker is important (for the bass reflex port).

Is the S5m suitable for use in a home theater in combination with other S-Series speakers?

Yes, the S5m shares technologies such as the DPC Array with other S-Series models, making it easier to achieve consistent sound for left/right or surround applications; thanks to its THX Ultra / THX Dominus certification, it is suitable for reference-level performance in larger rooms.

What types of connections or connectivity does the S5m offer?

The S5m is a passive speaker with no built-in amplification or DSP; it must be connected via conventional speaker terminals, with no electronic inputs such as XLR or RCA on the cabinet itself.

Can the S5m’s bass reflex port be sealed, and what effect does that have?

Yes, the ports can be completely blocked, causing the speaker to operate in sealed mode; this results in a slightly reduced bass response but provides a tighter response and can offer advantages in rooms with challenging acoustics.

How sensitive is the S5m, and what does this mean for the required amplifier quality?

Sensitivity is 89.6 dB (2.83 V / 1 m); this requires an amplifier with a robust power supply and low distortion to deliver high sound pressure levels without sound distortion.

What is the S5m’s frequency response, and what range can be expected at low frequencies?

Within the listening window (±1.5 dB), the S5m performs between 80 Hz and 20 kHz; at −10 dB, it reaches approximately 35–37 Hz in bass-reflex mode and approximately 41–37 kHz in sealed mode. In a living room environment, bass depth is perceived down to approximately 29–32 Hz.

Reviews & awards | Perlisten Audio S5m

StereoNET

: In this review, the Perlisten S5m is praised for its “clean and dynamic yet detailed and delicate-sounding” character, with the bass described as “nimble and tuneful” and the quality of the snare, hi-hat, and cymbals perceived as “well-struck yet delicate.” With vocals such as Linda Ronstadt’s “Lo Siento Mi Vida,” the S5m delivered a powerful, emotional performance, while the guitars sounded clearly separated.

fairaudio.de

: The S5m is characterized by an “extremely sensitive, finely detailed resolution” (highly sensitive, ultra-fine-grained resolution) that doesn’t come across as analytical but is entirely at the service of the music, with a silky-smooth high-frequency response, a slightly warm midrange, and a mature, not overly thick bass. The speakers deliver excellent spatiality and transparency, especially in vocals and instruments, and score high marks for their coherence and natural timbres.

Stereo.de (Tom Frantzen)

: The review describes the S5m as offering an almost euphoric listening experience in terms of sound quality: “incredible resolution, unbelievable timing, and superb spatiality as well as tonal depth,” and, according to Frantzen, one of the best stand-mount speakers overall.

ON OFF (Spain)

: This review calls the S5m a speaker that leaves you “breathless” and delivers sound on par with speakers that are many times more expensive. The bass is reproduced with depth, rhythm, and impact; at the same time, clarity in the midrange and precision in the high frequencies stand out, as does a natural tonal character, especially with vocals, strings, and brass. However, it is emphasized that powerful amplifiers are necessary to get the most out of the S5m.

LowBeats.de

: In a smaller listening room, the S5m performs like an extremely precise monitor speaker. Every recording is reproduced with great transparency; fine details are highlighted with extreme precision; the bass is deep and dry; and voices are vivid and positioned close to the listener’s perspective.

Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this.
