More information in one fell swoop! What really stands out is that every sound and instrument feels more tangible. It’s just a streamer—no DAC—so it’s quite pricey. But it’s definitely a major upgrade compared to cheaper streamers… it’s like connecting a higher-end DAC. Yeah!

Background information
The LUMIN U1 is a high-end network transport designed for maximum audio performance. It uses a CNC-machined aluminum housing, chosen for its anti-vibration properties. Internally, everything is focused on low-noise signal paths, with high-performance components such as ultra-low noise USB outputs. The design team led by LeedH adheres strictly to a minimalist signal philosophy. Production takes place in Hong Kong, where carefully selected materials are also assembled.
Brand history
In 2012, LUMIN introduced the world’s first network player capable of playing DSD files. After two years of development and hundreds of hours of critical listening, this product was launched with a single forum post. Since then, LUMIN has expanded its lineup to nine models, ranging in price points. All products share a focus on natural music playback, continuous software development and a seamless streaming experience. In recent years, LUMIN has added support for services such as Roon, MQA and Spotify. In addition, the company has introduced features such as Leedh Processing, a digital volume control technology. LUMIN develops hardware, firmware and software internally, allowing for rapid implementation of new features.

An AES/EBU cable can be used for professional transmission of digital audio signals. AES3 was developed in a collaboration between the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). An AES3 signal can carry two channels of PCM audio through various transfer media, including balanced cable, unbalanced cable, and optical fiber cable.

Optical input, interference-free and therefore proven to be the better option with some dacs, although they are often limiting in bitrate (yet there are dacs that let in up to 24 bit/192 kHz). The cable used is hugely important we can report, we’d be happy to let you assess these differences.

SPDIF is the abbreviation for Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format. (Nice that we, as a small country, have had influence there!) It is a standard for the transmission of a digital signal between, for example, a streamer or CD drive to dac. The cable used makes quite a difference in playback. A standard cable shows mostly a messy and abundant low, and the middle and high sludge into a mess. There are many who dispute this. Be skeptical, but there has to be a time for evaluation.

The BNC connector (in full Bayonet-Neill-Concelman connector) has a bayonet connection (rotary system) that requires a pin on the male side that attaches to the female side using a spring. This prevents the two components from becoming loose. There are manufacturers who consider this the only good coaxial connection. Pure adapters available in the shop!

Surely a streamer is not as important as a dac? We receive that question very regularly. Well … the influence of the streamer is huge. Comparing different streamers on the same dac creates extraordinary differences. The mere transmission of zeros and ones, there can not go much wrong there, you might think… Yet! We like to let you hear the difference.

Separate streamer without dac

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
