Brand History
Hegel was founded in Norway in the late 1980s by Bent Holter. In his graduate project at Trondheim University of Technology, he developed a solution for reducing distortion in transistor amplifiers. This led to the technology that later became known as SoundEngine. In 1988, the name Hegel was first used for an amplifier. The company released several CD players and amplifiers in the 1990s. In 1996, the first fully balanced amplifier was introduced. Around 2004, the brand began developing DA converters. Later products featured networking capabilities to support digital music playback. Hegel exclusively markets its own electronics, developing both the circuit design and the necessary software itself. The company conducts international distribution of its products from Norway.

Reviews & awards | Hegel H190

Testberichte.de

rates the Hegel H190 as a very good amplifier with a score of 1.1. The amplifier delivers powerful and precise sound reproduction, with controlled bass and finely detailed treble. It also features versatile connectivity options, including analog and digital inputs, network functionality, and support for AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect. One potential limitation is that the H190 may be oversized for smaller listening rooms.

Fairaudio

emphasizes that the Hegel H190 offers neutral and stable sound reproduction, with exceptional transparency and detail for its price range. The integrated DAC and headphone amplifier are not merely considered extras, but full-fledged components. Network integration is intuitive and reliable. The sound is characterized by crystal-clear tones, spatial stability, and a serene calmness in the overall soundstage. The H190 delivers a dynamic and balanced performance, with a slight tendency toward coolness in the tonal balance.

Hi-Fi Voice

notes that the Hegel H190 delivers a calm and natural sound, with a clear and smooth midrange. Vocal performance is intimate and easy to understand, with plenty of air and space in the presentation. The high frequencies are crisp and well-integrated, without any changes in timbre or loss of detail. The amplifier handles dynamic transitions well and delivers a solid volume level without exaggeration. Regardless of the connected speakers, the H190 maintains its calm and balanced character.

StereoNET

highlights the Hegel H190’s precise placement of instruments and vocals, creating a convincing sense of the original recording environment. With acoustic tracks, the amplifier offers total clarity, with a tangible realism in the vocals and subtle details such as the movement of fingers across the strings. With more complex electronic music, the H190 remains subtle and detailed, with a wide and well-defined soundstage. Even at higher volumes, the amplifier remains clean and preserves the nuances of the recording.

Tech Reviews

notes that the Hegel H190 offers a tighter and more controlled sound compared to competitors such as the Denon PMA-2500NE. The bass response is more precise, and the overall sound is less analytical and clinical than earlier models such as the Hegel Röst. The H190 delivers music with impressive immediacy and outperforms other amplifiers in its class in terms of airiness and bass control.

Techweekmag.com

emphasizes that the Hegel H190 delivers a clear and open sound with superior resolution. The amplifier uses Sound Engine 2 technology, which corrects the incoming signal in real time without traditional feedback in the circuits. This results in accurate and detailed sound reproduction, with an increased damping factor and a clear OLED display.

CD

The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this.
