Description

Description: Freakuence!
Hold on to your headphones! The Campfire Audio Ara thunders through the low end with almost clinical speed, while the vocals are magnified and thrust into the spotlight. Crisp and airy up top, with a pure clarity that’s gentle on your ears even at high volumes. Uncompromising detail!
General description
The Campfire Audio Ara is a high-end in-ear monitor with balanced armature drivers, designed for those who value detailed sound reproduction, transparency, and a refined stereo image. This Campfire Audio Ara model delivers a sound that is very clear and precise, with each instrument taking its rightful place in the soundstage. The sound is natural and reference-like; fairly neutral, with a slight emphasis on high frequencies to bring out detail and airiness in the music.
The Campfire Audio Ara delivers impressive dynamics: fast transients, crisp articulation, and excellent separation between bass, midrange, and treble. The bass is tight and carefully controlled, with sufficient depth without overpowering the sound. The midrange comes across as clear and precise, with high voices and accents in particular gaining extra clarity. Thanks to the wide stereo image, the listening experience has a sense of spaciousness that you often only hear in top-of-the-line monitor models.
For those who like to make critical comparisons: The Campfire Audio Ara pairs exceptionally well with sources that have a low noise floor and a good power supply, allowing the detail and nuances to shine through fully. Want to know how the Campfire Audio Ara sounds compared to, say, the Andromeda or Solaris? Schedule a listening session to assess the differences in sound presentation for yourself, or discuss trade-in options so you can find the perfect monitor for your ears.

Questions & Answers

What is the driver configuration of the Campfire Audio Ara, and how does it affect the sound?

The Ara features seven balanced armature drivers (4 for bass, 1 for midrange, 2 for treble), resulting in extreme detail, clarity in the high frequencies, and excellent separation between instruments.

What are the Ara’s impedance and sensitivity, and does it require a separate amplifier?

The Ara has a low impedance of around 8.5 Ω and a sensitivity of approximately 94 dB, which means that many sources are sufficient, but sensitive sources may produce audible noise in silence.

What type of cable/connector does the Ara use, and can it be replaced?

Ara uses MMCX connectors, which means the cable is interchangeable; separate, high-quality cables are available to suit personal preferences.

How is the fit, and which earbuds are best?

Because of the relatively long nozzles, a good seal is essential; the included silicone E-type tips and foam tips usually provide the best fit and insulation.

What is the Ara’s frequency range?

The Ara covers a range from approximately 10 Hz to 26 kHz, making both deep bass and airy high frequencies audible.

How do you operate the device (adjust volume / change tracks)?

The Ara itself has no physical controls; all operations are performed via the source device (such as a DAP, computer, or phone) to which the Ara is connected.

Is the Ara suitable for music genres with a lot of bass or electronic music?

The bass response is tight and controlled but sometimes lacks depth; users who expect a lot of bass may want to consider adding a preamp or an external DAC/amp.

How loud is the sound during silences—is there any noise?

During quiet passages, there may be an audible “hiss” if the source has low power or delivers low current; this is best avoided by using sources with a low noise floor.

Which sources pair well with the Ara in terms of connectivity and compatibility?

Ara works out of the box with any player that has a 3.5 mm output; better results are achieved with players that have low output impedance, a high-fidelity DAC, or an external amplifier for lower distortion.

What materials is it made of, and how do they affect durability and sound quality?

The housing is made of titanium with stainless steel nozzles, ensuring robustness and low resonance; the metal housing enhances clarity in the high frequencies.

Reviews & awards | Campfire Audio Ara

Headfonics

The Ara is praised for its “mature reference tuning” and seamless crossover transitions, thanks to its Solid-Body internal chamber structure and T.A.E.C. configuration. The build quality (Grade 2 titanium and precise finish) scores highly, though the bass response is perceived as light compared to what some users are accustomed to.

Audioreviews.org (Music For The Masses)

The Ara offers spectacular separation and imaging. The bass is described as “inexpressive,” the lower mids lack some body, while female vocals in particular are beautiful and crystal-clear. The trebles are sparkling but can be a bit sharp at high volumes.

Major HiFi

This review calls the Ara a standout performer: it offers a more natural sound than some other models in the Campfire line, with an accurate soundstage and a reference-like sound signature. Downsides include the price and the fact that bass enthusiasts may be disappointed by the lack of deep bass.

Audiofool Reviews

The Ara is described as very transparent, clear, and open in the high end; the midrange is very clean, although certain higher registers are somewhat energetic and possibly even a bit sharp. The four bass drivers deliver detail and speed but lack the body of dynamic drivers; the Ara requires a source with good specifications (low output impedance, etc.) to truly shine.

Audiophile On

The Ara excels in detail and resolution, making it particularly well-suited for critical listening and professional use. The low frequencies are tight and punchy, but lack the texture and sub-bass found in, for example, the Solaris. The midrange is linear and emphasizes vocals and instruments, but according to this review, it lacks a warmer tone.

CD
