General description
The ATC SCM20ASL Classic is an active three-way studio monitor that integrates midrange, treble, and bass frequencies to provide direct audio amplification. This ATC SCM20ASL Classic studio monitor is known for its accurate reproduction and clarity in every detail, while maintaining transparency in the stereo image and natural dynamics. Thanks to the quality of the midrange, every element in a recording remains audible, while the high frequencies are accentuated without harshness.
With the ATC SCM20ASL Classic, the soundstage is wide and open: instruments and vocals seem to float away from the monitor, with a depth that makes listening a rewarding experience. The tonal balance remains consistent regardless of volume, ensuring that even quiet passages retain their fluidity. The speaker succeeds in conveying subtle nuances with exceptional resolution and texture, which is particularly noticeable in acoustic passages where detail takes center stage.
For those looking for a high-quality reference speaker with controlled dynamics and a realistic stereo image, the ATC SCM20ASL Classic is a compelling choice. Background Information
The ATC SCM20ASL Classic is an active studio monitor known for its precision and clarity. Designed by the ATC team, with significant contributions from founder Billy Woodman, the design philosophy focuses on accurate sound reproduction without coloration. The cabinet is made of high-quality MDF with a veneer finish, designed for minimal resonance. The internal wiring uses oxygen-free copper for optimal signal integrity, while the drivers are manufactured in-house. ATC pays close attention to material selection, with a focus on durability and performance.
Brand history
ATC was founded in 1974 by Billy Woodman in the United Kingdom. That same year, the company developed a 12-inch bass driver, the PA75-314, intended for professional applications. In 1985, ATC introduced a monitor loudspeaker with an in-house developed Soft Dome midrange unit. This was followed in 1989 by the brand’s first complete loudspeaker, the SCM50A. In 1996, the brand developed a self-designed amplifier with completely discrete components. In 2000, the first digital converter (DAC) was presented. As of 2011, ATC produces its own tweeters in the United Kingdom. The entire range, including transducers, amplifiers and speakers, is designed and produced in-house. In 2013, the electronics division was expanded with new product lines. In 2015, ATC released an integrated amplifier. In 2022, the company introduced a new active loudspeaker, the SCM20A Pro Mk2, with improved amplification and components.

You can make a monitor speaker (bookshelf model) sound fantastic. The influence of the amplifier is often underestimated. A monitor won’t sound like a floorstanding speaker… but you can extract an enormous sense of grandeur from it. It’s not just the size that makes audiophiles choose a monitor; the timing of a two-way system also ensures that there are hordes of enthusiasts who wouldn’t even consider a three-way floorstanding speaker. It’s a matter of taste! So please stop by for a comparison.

Reviews & awards | ATC SCM20ASL Classic

What Hi-Fi? (review by Ketan Bharadia et al.)

– This review shows that the ATC SCM20ASL active speakers are exceptionally transparent and detailed; they reveal literally every nuance of a recording, without embellishment and with remarkable clarity and resolution, especially in vocals and instruments.

OHHIFI (by Frank Sterling, June 2026)

– The review emphasizes that these speakers offer “studio-grade” accuracy with a particularly strong midrange where vocals are rendered with warmth, focus, and naturalness; the bass is tight and fast, although there is no significant extension into the lowest frequencies; the price in the U.S. is noted as being on the high side compared to the U.K.

AVForums (by Ed Selley, September 2025)

– Here, detail, tonal accuracy, and imaging are praised as “astonishing”; the build quality is excellent and more than appropriate for the price range. Sonically, the speakers are unforgiving of mediocre recordings, but when the quality is good, the performance is impressive on nearly every front.

Stereophile (by Jason Victor Serinus, AXPONA 2025 presentation)

– The SCM20ASL is described as a compact active monitor with powerful Class-A/B MOSFET amplification, featuring a mid/bass driver and soft-dome tweeter of ATC’s own design; when listening to piano works, among other things, the sound is characterized as refined, controlled, and uncompromising.

The Absolute Sound (by Neil Gader, December 2025)

– The writer compares the active SCM20ASL with the passive SCM20P and notes that the active version particularly excels when it comes to the integration of the driver and amplification: greater control, greater coherence, and a more direct sound; the craftsmanship and ATC’s wealth of experience are also praised.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
