Description

Description Freakuence!
Don’t be fooled! This thing is massive. The 212 Black Label goes surprisingly deep and pushes the boundaries in the lowest octaves while remaining crisp during fast passages. The rhythm is instantly felt; the drums and kick have drive and power without becoming boomy. The dynamic peaks are incredible. But of course, you’ll need—and want—the space to accommodate it. 🙂

Background information
The REL 212 Black Label subwoofer is a masterpiece of engineering and design, focused on ultimate bass reproduction. Developed by REL Acoustics, this model features high-quality components such as carbon fiber material for lightweight yet rigid woofer constructions. The internal wiring has been carefully selected for optimal sound quality, while the enclosure is designed to minimize resonance. REL often uses high-quality MDF for robust and durable enclosures. The design philosophy centers on integration with audio systems to deliver a natural and powerful sound.
Brand history
REL Acoustics was founded by Richard Edmund Lord, born in 1939. After a stint as a radio operator in the merchant marine, he founded the company with the goal of building the best subwoofers. In 1990, REL introduced the High Level Input, which derives the input signal from the power amplifier, allowing for seamless integration with speakers. In 1998, the company developed the ABC Input Filters and High Current Amplifiers, focused on precise crossover settings and providing sufficient power for subwoofer drivers. After an acquisition in 2005, new ideas and technologies were introduced, including NaturalSound Filtering in 2007 and Carbon Fibre Driver Cones in 2010. In 2014, REL launched Zero Compression Wireless, followed by the No. 25 Anniversary Model in 2016 and the Series HT in 2018.

Questions & Answers

What is the difference between high-level and low-level inputs on the 212 Black Label?

High-Level uses the Neutrik Speakon connector to connect to the speaker outputs, thereby preserving the full sound signature of the power amplifier; Low-Level uses RCA/Wired LFE/XLR for use with preamplifiers or A/V processors.

How do you adjust the gain, crossover, and phase for optimal integration with the speakers?

Three knobs control High/Low Level gain, .1/LFE level, and crossover frequency (20–120 Hz), plus a phase switch (0 or 180°).

How does the .1/LFE input work, and is the crossover used there?

The .1/LFE input (RCA or XLR) bypasses the standard crossover and uses a fixed 120 Hz fourth-order filter, allowing it to pass the full range of low frequencies during movie playback.

What type of amplifier is best suited for the high-level input on this model?

Class A/B, D, conventional, or differential/balanced amplifiers will function, provided that, in the case of Class D, the black wire is handled correctly (not connected to the speaker ground unless it is chassis ground).

What are the dimensions and weight of the 212 Black Label?

The dimensions are approximately 362 × 840 × 523 mm (W×H×D), with a net weight of about 60.8 kg.

How much power does the 212 Black Label’s built-in amplifier deliver, and what frequency range does it cover?

The amplifier delivers 1,000 watts RMS, with output peaks exceeding 1,200 watts; the frequency response drops to -6 dB in the room at approximately 18 Hz.

What driver configuration does the 212 Black Label use, and what is the role of the passive radiators?

There are two active 12-inch CarbonAlloy™ speakers, one down-firing passive radiator, and one rear passive radiator for added depth and dispersion; this enhances low frequencies without introducing additional distortion.

Is the 212 Black Label suitable for both music (stereo system) and home theater applications?

Yes, the model is designed for reference-quality music in two-channel setups as well as for large-scale home theater integration, thanks in part to the combination of high-level, low-level, and LFE inputs.

What safety and security features are built into the 212 Black Label?

Protection features include a fully electronic SetSafe system, DC fault detection, output short-circuit protection, and safe supply voltage and fuse settings (8 A at 220–240 V, 15 A at 110–120 V).

Reviews & awards | REL 212 Black Label

AVForums

: In this review, the REL 212 Black Label is praised for its ability to reach “the deepest bass” and to play loudly, surpassing the performance of its predecessor, the 212 SX. The sound reproduction is described as tight and musical, with greater authority during extended bass passages. However, it is very heavy and comes with a hefty price tag.

FutureAudiophile.com

: The author emphasizes that the 212 Black Label is the only model in the S Series to feature two forward-firing active 12-inch drivers combined with two passive radiators in a taller cabinet, which sets it apart from other models. The price tag is $5,999, and the system is considered a serious option for those seeking quality in both areas: home theater and music.

The Audio Tailor

: Here, the REL 212 Black Label is described as a subwoofer that is both “deep as the ocean and remarkably agile.” The combination of powerful performance and finesse gives movies an impressive impact, while vinyl and high-resolution audio benefit from rich detail and nuance.

CD

The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this.
