Details
General description
The Quad Artera Play+ is a versatile combination CD player, DAC and preamplifier in one compact enclosure. With the addition of aptX Bluetooth, you easily stream music from smartphones, tablets and computers. The front has a discreetly placed headphone jack with dedicated circuitry for a high-quality listening experience.
Inside is the ESS Sabre32 Reference DAC, which supports several digital inputs and is compatible with high-resolution music formats. The slotted CD tray buffers data before sending it to the DAC, and four digital filter options allow you to adjust the sound to your liking.
The analog filter circuitry has been refined and the power supply improved with a larger toroidal transformer and independent low-noise power supplies, contributing to a clearer and more dynamic sound. The preamp has a minimalist design with high-quality components and offers both RCA and balanced XLR outputs.
In terms of connectivity, there are five digital inputs, two analog inputs and two digital outputs, plus a 12V trigger output. The housing has an aluminum front panel, thick glass top and CNC-milled heatsinks on the sides, with intuitive touch controls and an included remote control.
Background information
The Quad Artera Play+ was designed by the British Quad team in Huntingdon, with a focus on sound purity and simplicity. The preamplifier/DAC/CD player combo combines classic British audio engineering with modern digital performance. The housing is solid aluminum, while internally it uses high-quality ESS Sabre32 DACs. All optimized for signal purity and minimal interference.
Brand history
Quad was founded in 1936 by Peter Walker in England. The company introduced its first loudspeaker, the “Corner Ribbon,” in 1949. This loudspeaker used a ribbon technology to produce high frequencies, which provided clear reproduction of treble. In the 1950s, Quad introduced the Electrostatic Loudspeaker (ESL), which was a milestone in the development of loudspeaker technology. The ESL was known for its full-range electrostatic technology, which provided unprecedented natural sound.
Quad has since released several models and series, including the Z Series. This model uses a specially designed sandwich construction in the ribbon tweeters for higher sensitivity and accuracy. The brand continues to develop its products while staying true to Peter Walker’s original philosophy of staying as close to the original sound as possible.
