General description
The Monitor Audio Gold GS10 is a powerful stand-mount speaker from the Monitor Audio Gold series, designed for those who appreciate high-resolution sound reproduction. This monitor delivers a rich stereo image, with refined high-frequency reproduction thanks to the C-CAM dome tweeter and a precise mid-bass driver. What stands out is the detail in the sound and the dynamics: the GS10 distinguishes itself through clarity in the highs and mids, without throwing the sound out of balance.
With the Monitor Audio Gold GS10, you’ll hear a sound that’s pure and spacious, with sufficient bass response for most small to medium-sized listening rooms. The speaker excels in detail, with a natural texture in instruments and vocals, while the stereo image impresses with its precise placement and openness. The soundstage remains clean at lower volumes, with elegant transparency as the music becomes more demanding.
If you compare the Monitor Audio Gold GS10 with other bookshelf speakers or floor-standing monitors in the same price range, you’ll find that the GS10 excels in detail and resolution. The finesse in microdynamics makes this monitor speaker ideal for those seeking a natural yet distinct audio reproduction. Want to hear how the GS10 sounds in your listening room? Questions & Answers

What are the nominal impedance and sensitivity of the Gold GS10?

The nominal impedance is 8 ohms, and the sensitivity is 88 dB at 1 W/1 m.

What is the recommended amplifier power for the GS10?

An RMS power of approximately 40–100 watts is recommended for optimal performance.

How low does the GS10’s frequency range go, especially in the bass?

The frequency range extends from approximately 40 Hz to 43 kHz (±3 dB) with a rear-firing port.

What drivers are used in the Gold GS10, and how is the crossover configured?

It features one 6-inch RST2 woofer/metal midrange driver and a 25 mm Gold Dome C-CAM tweeter; the crossover frequency to the tweeter is around 2.7 kHz.

How should the GS10 be positioned for the best sound quality?

The speaker enclosure is rear-ported, so the GS10 performs better when placed a short distance from the back wall and, preferably, on stands so that the listener’s head is approximately at the same height as the woofer-midrange unit.

Is a subwoofer necessary or useful with the GS10?

A subwoofer isn’t necessary, since the GS10 goes fairly low—down to around 40 Hz—but in larger rooms or for watching movies, a subwoofer is definitely useful for adding extra bass.

Which cables and connectors are compatible with the GS10?

Use high-quality speaker cables that are thick enough for an 8-ohm load and sturdy cable lugs; the terminals are gold-plated with screw terminals.

Does the GS10 support balanced connections or line input?

The GS10 is a passive speaker and has only traditional speaker terminals; it does not have balanced or built-in amplifier inputs or outputs.

Can the grille panels be removed, and how easy is it to do so?

Yes, the grille fronts are removable; they are secured with pin fasteners in recessed slots around the drivers and can be easily snapped off.

Are the Gold GS10s suitable for use with tube amplifiers?

The GS10 can be used with tube amplifiers, but expect some extra brightness in the mid-high range due to its sensitivity curve and impedance behavior at lower frequencies.

You can make a monitor speaker (bookshelf model) sound fantastic. Often the influence of the amplifier is underestimated. A monitor will not sound like a column…. but there is tremendous greatness to be had from it. It’s not just the size that makes enthusiasts choose a monitor, but the timing of a two-way system ensures that there are hordes of fanatics who shouldn’t think of a three-way column. Taste! So be sure to stop by for a comparison.

Reviews & awards | Monitor Audio Gold GS10

Stereophile

: In its September 2007 review, Stereophile praises the Monitor Audio Gold Signature GS10 for its exceptionally clean, clear treble and excellent detail reproduction. The speaker offers solid and reasonably extended bass response for its size, though very low frequencies (below ±50–40 Hz) are noticeably attenuated. Speech and vocal nuances sound convincing, although vocals can come across as loud and sometimes sharp at listening volumes. With classical recordings and acoustic music, the GS10 demonstrates its added value thanks to its natural midrange and sufficient dynamic range.

TechRadar

: According to TechRadar, the GS10 is one of Monitor Audio’s most balanced designs from that period. The finish is refined, with wood veneer on all sides, rounded edges, and high-quality materials such as cast aluminum for the driver housing. The technology surrounding the drivers—such as the use of metal cone structures and an anodized C-CAM tweeter—contributes to a wide frequency response (40 Hz–43 kHz) and strong transient response. However, care must be taken with placement and the audio chain; the speaker only sounds its best after many hours of break-in, and with the right amplification, oversaturation in the high frequencies can be avoided.

HiFi.pl

: The Polish website describes the GS10 as coherent and well-balanced, with minimal coloration across the entire sound spectrum. The low frequencies are tight and neutral, although the bass response may be a bit too light for those seeking power and massiveness. High-frequency instruments, such as percussion, brass, and strings, are reproduced clearly and with great intensity, without any notable issues. As a result, the speakers perform exceptionally well with electric or dynamic music, but with multi-layered vocal arrangements, they lack some refinement and emotional color.

CD

Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this.
