Questions & Answers

How loud can the McIntosh MHP1000 play without distortion?

The headphones offer a maximum sound pressure level of approximately 122 dB (at 300 mW @ 500 Hz) and have a nominal sensitivity of 97 dB per 1 mW; distortion remains low (below 0.1%) at normal listening levels.

What about comfort during extended use?

This model features genuine leather ear cups and an adjustable headband with multiple fixed positions for a secure fit; the ear cups are over-ear and feature a closed-back design with a bass port.

How do you replace the ear pads or cables on the MHP1000?

The ear cushions are removable via a click-and-tap mechanism and can be ordered as a replacement part (Part No. 310544SP); the included cables are interchangeable and lock into place with mini-plugs that click into the ear cups.

What inputs do you need to use these headphones?

A headphone output with a 1/4-inch (6.3 mm) or 3.5 mm stereo jack; both cables are included.

Is a separate headphone amplifier required for optimal performance?

Since the impedance is 200 ohms, a powerful or high-quality amplified headphone output is recommended to achieve sufficient volume and dynamic range.

What frequency range does the MHP1000 cover?

The frequency response ranges from approximately 5 Hz to 20 kHz, ensuring that both low bass tones and high frequencies are reproduced accurately.

What types of connectors do the included cables have?

There are two cables: one with a 6.3 mm (¼-inch) stereo jack, and one with a 3.5 mm (⅛-inch) mini-jack; both are gold-plated and feature channel identification.

How much does the MHP1000 weigh, and how big are the ear cups?

It weighs approximately 464 grams net; the outer dimensions of the cups are approximately 10.2 cm, and the depth is approximately 5.2 cm.

Is this model suitable for mobile use or on the go?

Because the headphones are closed-back and heavy (~464 g), they’re great for home use; on the go, the 200-ohm impedance and weight can be a drawback without a suitable amplifier.

What does “Tesla Technology” mean in the context of the MHP1000?

The drivers utilize a Tesla-annular neodymium magnet configuration with increased flux density in the voice coil gap, which provides a wider magnetic flux and better output.

Reviews & awards | McIntosh MHP1000

HiFi Insider

: Michael Liang praises the McIntosh MHP1000 as “the best closed-back headphones I’ve heard to date.” He describes them as exceptional in performance, design, and build quality. They’re very comfortable during long listening sessions thanks to soft leather ear pads and a light yet secure clamping force. The sound is neutral with detailed resolution, without becoming bright or harsh, and the bass is “seriously deep.” The imaging receives praise: instruments and vocal positions are clearly placed within the soundstage.

AudioVideo SA / AVSA (South Africa)

: In their test setup with the MHA100 amplifier, the MHP1000 brings out the “heart and soul of the music” in classical piano recordings and contemporary vocals. The headphones are “comfortable and beautifully executed” and “sound every bit as lavish as they look and feel.” They describe the sound as smooth, rich, and well-rounded, with a wide stereo image and immersive soundstaging.

AV-Online Hungary

: The review begins on a critical note: “Right out of the box,” the MHP1000 sounded strained, harsh, and lacked dynamic range in the low frequencies. After a few weeks of burn-in and use with a tube amplifier, a clear improvement set in: clarity, dynamics, and sound reproduction became “brilliantly precise” and “chillingly lifelike.” The sealed enclosure somewhat limits the depth of the soundstage, though the clarity remains impressive.

Audiofanatyk.pl

: This review is considerably more critical. The writer believes that the MHP1000 does not justify its price, either technically or in terms of sound quality. The bass is described as light compared to expectations, lacking power, and struggling to take on the leading rhythmic role. The midrange feels cold and methodical; the treble is even and clear without becoming intrusive, but the overall sound lacks emotion and liveliness. The reviewer feels that certain less expensive models deliver a more appealing sound.

CD
