Background information
The C.E.C. TL5 is designed with their renowned belt-drive technology, which applies turntable principles to CD playback for minimal vibration and jitter. The chassis is solid and low-resonance construction, with an aluminum front and reinforced internal structure. The drive components are made in Japan. The philosophy behind the design is pure signal transmission without noise, developed by a small specialized team within C.E.C.
Brand history
C.E.C. (Chuo Denki Co., Ltd.) was founded in 1954 in Tokyo, Japan. The company began producing phonographs, followed by the development of electric record players. In 1991, C.E.C. introduced its first belt-drive CD player, the TL1. This player used a drive system that combined elements of conventional analog turntables with digital CD technology. The manufacturer also developed its own digital interface, the Superlink digital link. C.E.C. produces devices in-house, including CD drives, DA converters and amplifiers. Production and assembly take place in Japan, with parts manufactured in-house or specifically selected. The company uses a modular design approach in which components are interchangeable within certain product lines.

An AES/EBU cable can be used for professional transmission of digital audio signals. AES3 was developed in a collaboration between the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). An AES3 signal can carry two channels of PCM audio through various transfer media, including balanced cable, unbalanced cable, and optical fiber cable.

Optical input, interference-free and therefore proven to be the better option with some dacs, although they are often limiting in bitrate (yet there are dacs that let in up to 24 bit/192 kHz). The cable used is hugely important we can report, we’d be happy to let you assess these differences.

SPDIF is the abbreviation for Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format. (Nice that we, as a small country, have had influence there!) It is a standard for the transmission of a digital signal between, for example, a streamer or CD drive to dac. The cable used makes quite a difference in playback. A standard cable shows mostly a messy and abundant low, and the middle and high sludge into a mess. There are many who dispute this. Be skeptical, but there has to be a time for evaluation.

Running gear comparisons few people get around to within the audio hobby. Fortunately, we have the opportunity to do so here. Take a dac of your choice, and leave it where it is. From there, plug in a different drive each time, and then it quickly becomes apparent that drives have a huge impact. It really is the case that it always looks like a different dac is being put in. The digital cable in between is also a determining factor. Come by for a comparison!

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
