Reviews & awards | Audio Research SP-14

Stereophile

describes the Audio Research SP14 as a preamplifier that combines the positive qualities of both the Classé Audio DR-6 and the Conrad-Johnson PV9. The unit offers a natural reproduction of various musical elements, making the listening experience highly engaging and immersive. The SP14 is praised for its ability to reveal nuances in performances that previously went unnoticed.

Stereophile

Performs measurements on the SP14 and finds that the channel separation is respectable below 1 kHz, but decreases above this frequency to approximately 30 dB at 20 kHz. This suggests capacitive coupling between the channels, possibly caused by the volume control or the line stage. The frequency response via the CD input is flat, while the phono input shows a slight deviation, with a maximum RIAA error of +0.38 dB at 11.5 kHz and a drop of nearly 1 dB at 10 Hz. This can result in a subtle reduction in bass impact and an enhanced sense of detail in the high frequencies.

HiFi Engine

describes the SP14 as a hybrid preamplifier with a frequency range of 5 Hz to 50 kHz and a total harmonic distortion of 0.01%. The gain is 66 dB for the phono section and 20 dB for the line section, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 78 dB and 98 dB, respectively. The preamplifier uses a single 6DJ8/ECC88 tube and measures 480 x 134 x 260 mm, weighing 5.5 kg.

Audio Database

notes that the SP14 features a hybrid design, in which the line stage uses FETs instead of tubes, as in the SP-9mkII. In addition, the SP14 offers extra features such as a Rec Out selector, a 6 dB-step 5-position attenuator, the ability to copy between two types of tapes, and a bypass switch for the auxiliary circuits. A black panel and buttons were available as options.

CD

The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this.
